Seedling Sale event now slated for Feb. 17 at Sweet Home location
A soggy early winter will delay customer pickups for the 29th annual Linn County Small Woodlands Association seedling sale.
Seedling deliveries had been scheduled for Saturday Feb. 3 at the Linn County Expo.
Plants will now be available Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Sweet Home Oregon Department of Forestry offices from 8 to 11am.
Nursery crews have been unable to harvest young plants because of muddy conditions in the fields, explained Lena Tucker, seedling sale chair.
An auxiliary event, the Local Woods Fair — which features educational booths and crafted wood products — will not be held this year.
“Unfortunately we cannot host the Local Woods Fair and Sale due to space limitations,” said Tucker.
LCSWA and 4-H volunteers will gather Thursday and Friday ahead of the seedling pickups to assemble 233 pre-orders at the Sweet Home Oregon Department of Forestry. See the revised event listing for details.
Tucker said there will be a limited number of tree and shrub seedlings available for purchase the day of the event. Cash and checks can be used for payments.
Some of the species available include Willamette Valley Ponderosa pine, Incense cedar, Giant Sequoia, Blue Elderberry and Western Redbud.
The annual sale provides quality nursery stock for small woodland owners and scholarship money for both 4-Hers and college students in forestry or conservation programs.
Rainfall in Linn County east of Lebanon during this past December was at 9.17 inches and another 9 inches has been registered this month as of Jan. 26, said Joe Holmberg, LCSWA member. “That’s a lot of rain,” he said.
