A tour and summer picnic are planned for the tree farm of Aaron and Shawn White on Saturday, July 9 beginning at 10 a.m. A severe ice storm in January of 2021 tore through their 30-year-old Douglas-fir plantations and knocked down pockets of larger trees. Large oak trees growing in the adjoining meadows were also leveled.
Aaron, an accomplished logger, and OSU Extension master woodland manager has been thinning and rehabilitating these damaged stands for the past year. The tour will emphasize the Whites’ efforts to recover from this extreme event.
The White tree farm is located atop Hungry hill just southwest of Scio. In this beautiful setting, we will have our annual summer potluck and picnic following the tour. Please bring your place settings and utensils. Drinks and snacks will be provided by our chapter.
Directions: The White’s address is 40130 North Ruby Loop Drive. Just south of Scio turn right (west) on Gilkey road. After the third 90-degree turn head up the hill onto Ruby Loop Drive. Yellow and green tree farm tour signs will direct you.
Detailed information on our events will be posted in the OSU Forestry Extension newsletter “the Needle,” and on our website Linncountyswa.com.
Landowners, who are not current members of OSWA and attend our tours, will be offered free OSWA membership for the remainder of the year. Don’t hesitate to tell your neighbors about these events and check out our web.
